Occupation:
I, William Jennings Bryan, was born in Illinois to a very Methodist family on March 19, 1860. I was home schooled so I excelled in my school work. I attended Illinois College and graduated valedictorian. Following college, I started my studies to become a lawyer. After graduating law school, I moved to Lincoln, Nebraska to practice law. During the democratic landslide in 1890, I was elected to Congress and then reelected in 1892. In 1893, the Sherman Silver Purchase Act caused a collapse in the silver market. This frightened me because it hurt a lot of farmers so I started preaching about the idea of free silver throughout America. This idea cause me to be elected as the Democratic Presidential Candidate but I lost every year I ran. I eventually became Secretary of State for President Woodrow Wilson.
Position on the Issue:
I strongly disagree with the idea of colonizing the Philipeans. Being a democrat, I am strongly anit-imperialistic and I believe that America should not be colonizing the Phillipeans. They should be left alone to deal with themselves. I resigned my position as Secretary of State because of foreign issues with Europe and President Wilson's decision to go to war with Germany. This does go against my view on the Mexican War and how there should be military intervention but I mostly believe that we should not intervene in the Philipeans.
Reason for Interest:
- Being a strong anti-imperialistic person, I go against the colonization of the Philipeans
- Us invading will change the culture of the people and that is not good
- The decision is taking time away from crutial decisions like the silver problem
